Encanto Residents Push Back Against Unchecked Housing Development
ADUs Bonus program runs amok. I’m a big fan of creating affordable housing for families and income for homeowners. This program has gone extreme for seasoned investors. I wouldn’t want to live next door to these behemoths.
Encanto, a serene neighborhood in Southeastern San Diego, is facing a surge of Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) projects under San Diego’s Bonus ADU program, which aims to boost affordable housing. Over 20 ADU projects are proposed, potentially adding 539 new units and significantly increasing the neighborhood’s density, straining infrastructure, and compromising safety. Residents, including Becca Bautista, have mobilized against this unchecked expansion, gathering over 500 signatures and advocating for the removal of the program. Their efforts have led the City Council to unanimously vote in favor of drafting a plan to remove the ADU Bonus Program from the city code within 60 days, marking a significant victory for the community.
